Moulton Fire Service

Built at the beginning of the war, beside the Chippenham Road, on a site which is now numbers 18 and 20. The Fire Station itself was of an arched prefabricated construction. The fire crews were part time and recruited locally. In charge of the station, was Section Leader Ron Green, landlord of the Kings Head. The first fire engine was a 'Bean', which had solid tyres. The driver and crew sat in the open, the crew sitting along its sides.

Some time later the engine was replaced by several vehicles, which were all used to pull a mobile pump. The crews were sometimes used to cover the Mildenhall area, but were not allowed to fight aircraft fires.

Members of the fire crew were:

Ron Green, (joint section leader)

Edward Turner, (joint section leader)

Reginald Johnson

Samuel Smith

Lewis Stanley Smith, (son of Samuel)

Alexander Bond

Bert Wallace

Edward Saltmarsh

The Fire Station was dismantled in the late 1940's. The building was bought by Cyril Reed, who erected it on his land in Brookside. The building was finally demolished in 1989.
